Wonder Docent to Display New Works by Studio Caliari

Wonder Docent is proud to present Everything is Apocalyptical: A Vessels Show featuring ceramics by Nevada City’s Studio Caliari. Opening August 1st during the next Nevada City Art Walk, the show runs through August 31st.
The body of work, which includes more than twenty hand-built ceramic vessels made between late 2024 and July 2025, explores themes of loneliness, cultural alienation, and the search for joy and connection in a chaotic world experienced by artist Marina Caliari, who was born and raised in Vitória Brazil and lived and worked in Spain before moving to the U.S. in 2017 and settling in Nevada City in 2022.
“Art was always my main language, the one that never needed translation or hesitation,” says Caliari, who left her home country at age 25.
Inspired by nature, childhood memories, conversations, and current global politics, the vessels incorporate humor to surprise and connect with their audience.
“Vessels are so symbolic, as they can be containers for all sorts of things, metaphorically- or physically-speaking. They can evoke a sense of protection, of guarding, of making something sacred,” says Caliari.
“At the same time, they can also be empty vessels. They can store food or water, or they can be a place for hidden things. I like to decorate some of them with sarcasm, but also, some of them can contain deep sadness, simple joys, and pure rage.”
Wonder Docent is Nevada City’s new creative hub, located in the former home of the Gray Goose at 230 Broad Street. The shop offers a curated selection of art supplies, stationery, and gifts as well as creative workshops for adults. Everything is Apocalyptical is Wonder Docent’s inaugural art exhibition.
Art exhibitions have always been part of the vision for Wonder Docent, said the shop’s co-owner Heather Heckler.
“We want to highlight artwork that we love,” said Heckler. “We’re so honored that Marina has chosen to show her work here. Her vessels are a perfect fit for Wonder Docent’s vibe–a simple message rooted in strong values with a little twist of humor.”
